Hinds effort in vain as Essex win

FRIENDS PROVIDENT TROPHY, GROUP D, Derby
Essex 194-4 beat Derbyshire 192-7 by six wickets (Essex 2pts, Derbyshire 0pts)

Hinds has hit successive half centuries in losing causes

Wavell Hinds' second big half century in successive days was again in vain as Derbyshire suffered a six-wicket FP Trophy defeat at home to Essex.

Hinds was run out for 81 as he helped rescue his side from 130-6 in a rain-reduced game to set a challenging target of 192-7 from 43 overs.

But Varun Chopra then hit 69 in reply and, helped by Matt Walker (37) and Graham Napier (28 no), Essex got home.

Victory for the visitors was secured in some comfort with 17 balls to spare.

Former West Indies Test star Hinds hit 95 for Derbyshire at Old Trafford on Sunday, only to be on the end of an eight-wicket defeat against Lancashire.

Essex's victory takes them above Derbyshire into second in Group D, behind leaders Lancashire.

One-day specialist Napier delivered a rousing all-round performance on only his second appearance since returning from the Indian Premier League.

His unbeaten 28 from just 15 deliveries followed an earlier burst of 3-8 in six balls.
