Wagg shines in Derbyshire victory

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Division Two, Derby (day four):
Derbyshire 188 & 431 beat Gloucestershire 222 & 280 by 117 runs

Derbyshire overcame some spirited Gloucestershire resistance for a 117-run victory in the Championship.

Gloucestershire, needing 398 to win from an overnight 118-2, lost Hamish Marshall early on the third day and nobody was able to play a big innings.

Nightwatchman Steve Kirby frustrated the home attack until after lunch.

But Derbyshire chipped away and wrapped up the win when Graham Wagg bowled Anthony Ireland for one. Wagg took 4-77 to go with his earlier 6-56.

The all-rounder became only the third player in Derbyshire's history to take 10 wickets and score 100 runs in the same match and the first since 1934 to achieve the feat.

Marshall, batting with a runner after injuring an ankle, had just scored the first runs of the morning when Charl Langeveldt got one to move away late to have him caught behind for 31.

The odds were very much on Derbyshire six overs later when Alex Gidman launched a loose drive at Langeveldt and was caught low down at point for nine.

The visitors were now 132-4 with their top four back in the pavilion and remained one-way traffic despite contributions from Chris Taylor (35) and David Brown (38).
