Northants saw their faint hopes of promotion dented as the opening day against Essex at Wantage Road was called off without a ball bowled.
With two games left, Northants trail second placed Worcester by 13 points.
Their last Championship win was in late July and rain resulted in a draw last time against Glamorgan in late August.
Essex have registered ex-Leicestershire left-hander John Maunders for the rest of the season and have named him in a 13 after he averaged 53 in the 2nd XI.
