Kent too good for Surrey in Pro40

PRO40 DIVISION TWO, The Oval: Kent 314-6 (40 overs) bt Surrey 172 (31.4) by 142 runs runs

Kent thoroughly outclassed Surrey with both bat and ball to claim a 142-run victory to maintain their Pro40 Division Two promotion hopes.

Joe Denly made 98 off 97 balls while Martin van Jaarsveld smashed 93 off 69 to help Kent post 314-6 at The Oval.

Robbie Joseph and Amjad Khan took two wickets each as the hosts fell to 21-4.

Jonathan Batty (49) and Matthew Spriegel (54) provided some resistance but James Tredwell took 4-32 to help Kent storm to a comprehensive win.

Essex remain at the top of Division Two with two games remaining, while Kent play their final match against the league leaders on Saturday 13 September.

Kent made a bright start after winning the toss and electing to bat, with captain Rob Key (21) in good form until he was caught at slip off Matt Nicolson.

But Denly was in superb touch and alongside Martin van Jaarsveld (93) put on a massive 178-run second-wicket partnership before the South African was run out, bringing an end to his entertaining 69-ball innings.

Denly soon followed for 98, edging a wide Jade Dernbach delivery, but late hitting from Darren Stevens (30) ensured Kent reached their massive total.

Surrey's reply began in the worst possible fashion when Scott Newman was bowled by Joseph for a duck as the opening bowlers ripped through the top order.

Batty and Spriegel put on 65 for the sixth wicket, but Surrey's dim hopes of points faded when the former was caught by Denly off the bowling of Van Jaarsveld.

Wickets continued to fall and Surrey were dismissed for 172 when Geraint Jones stumped Pedro Collins off Tredwell for four.
