But James Tredwell hit six fours and a six in his 54 as the visitors were 433 all out to set Yorkshire 204 to win.

After a defiant fifty Tredwell was caught at slip at the second attempt by Jacques Rudolph, but Amjad Khan added 21 as the Tykes faced an awkward target.

That looked rapidly more awkward after Vaughan squirted a catch to second slip off Robbie Joseph, who then captured Andrew Gale in his next over.

When Lyth was caught head high at second slip, the eighth wicket to fall, it looked bleak for the home side, but Gough and Matthew Hoggard held out for 11 overs together to take the score to 166.

Gough was superbly caught right-handed at backward point by skipper Rob Key, but despite six slips in place the final pair dug in.
