Magee struggles to victory
Belfast's Brian Magee
Brian Magee successfully defended his IBO super middleweight title
Brian Magee was felled for the second time in his career as he laboured to a seventh successful defence of his IBO super middleweight title on Saturday.

The Northern Irishman was knocked down by a swinging right hand from Nigerian Jerry Elliott after just 40 seconds.

Fighting in front of his home fans at the King's Hall, the Belfast fighter continued to be caught too often for comfort by his Germany-based rival.

But Magee weathered the early storm and did enough to hold onto his crown.

He was a very rugged boxer and you never knew where the punches where coming from

Magee was wobbled again by two more right hands in the seventh round.

But he boxed his way out of trouble, his higher work rate eventually winning him the decision of all three judges.

Despite his early visit to the canvas, Magee was happy with his performance.

''I was shocked more than hurt,'' he said. ''It's tough at this level, but you have to be a champion to get back up off the floor and win.

''He was a very rugged boxer and you never knew where the punches where coming from.''
