Brits fails to shine in Stuttgart

Spotakova claimed a world record with her first throw

Britain's athletes failed to deliver any top-three finishes on day one of the World Athletics Final in Stuttgart.

Lisa Dobriskey was fourth in the 1500m in four mins 7.72 secs. Bahrain's world champion Maryam Jamal won in 4.6:59.

Goldie Sayers, fourth at the Beijing Olympics, finished sixth in the javelin with a best effort of 58.04m.

She and the rest of the field were eclipsed by the Czech Olympic champion Barbora Spotakova, who claimed a world record of 72.28m with her first throw.

Martyn Rooney took fifth in the 400m in 45.82, well behind US Olympic gold medallist La Shawn Merritt.

GB's Beijing high jump silver medallist Germaine Mason cleared 2.26m for sixth place - 9cm behind Russia's Olympic champion Andrey Silnov.

Mo Farah was ninth over 3000m in 8.5:97 as Bernard Lagat of the USA won in 8.2:97.

Helen Clitheroe placed ninth in the 3000m steeplechase with 9.39:72 as Russia's Olympic champion Gulnara Galkina set a championship record of 9.21:73.

Asafa Powell headed a Jamaican 1-2-3 in the 100m with a winning time of 9.87, ahead of compatriots Nesta Carter (10.07) and Michael Frater (10.10)

Powell powers to Stuttgart glory

Britain's Olympic 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu lines up against American rival Sanya Richards on Sunday.

Richards warmed up for their showdown with victory in the 200m, winning in 22.5 ahead of fellow US runner Marshevet Hooker (22.69) and Jamaica's Kerron Stewart (22.72)
