Injury threatening Holmes' career
Kelly Holmes
Holmes has been struggling with the injury since June
Dame Kelly Holmes says she may retire in three weeks because of continuing problems with her Achilles injury.

The double Olympic champion, who wanted to go out in style at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne next March, will undergo an MRI scan in September.

Holmes told the Mail on Sunday: "It might say it has nearly healed.

"But if it shows that we can't get rid of the injury and that it needs an operation, then it's not worth thinking about the Commonwealth Games."

The injury, which the 35-year-old picked up in June, forced Holmes to miss the World Championships in Helsinki.

And she could only limp home in ninth place in her final track appearance in Britain at last week's Sheffield Grand Prix.

"I have to be clear of injury if I am to run at the Commonwealth Games. I am not going there struggling. I have done enough of that in my career.

"If I go, I'm going there to try to win and there is a good class of athletes in my events at the Commonwealths."
