Grantham archer Simon Terry beat Larry Godfrey 9-5 under a new scoring system to win the inaugural GB National Series recurve title at Lilleshall on Sunday.

Terry, who won World Cup Grand Final silver last week, scored two points for each of the four ends he won while Godfrey won two and the other was tied.

He said: "I was as fired up for this as I was in Copenhagen, and winning gold makes up for not winning in Denmark."

Charlotte Burgess defeated Naomi Folkard 8-2 in the women's competition.

The 22-year-old from Stockport, who was suffering with a cold and also beat Olympic bronze medallist Alison Williamson, said: "I'm really thrilled, not just to win the gold medal, but to shoot well against both Alison and Naomi."

Terry, who won individual and team bronze medals at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, added: "This is a great event, it gives you top level, competitive competition on your own doorstep. It is a great way to prepare yourself for international competition."

In the non-Olympic compound event, 19-year-old Lucy O'Sullivan shocked top-ranked archer Nichola Simpson 9-3 to take the women's title after beating Nicky Hunt in the semi-final.

"To beat two archers of the standard of Nicky and Nichola on the same day is really something else," said O'Sullivan.

"My ultimate ambition is the Olympics, and I understand compound will be a demonstration sport in Rio in 2016, and then part of the archery competition by 2020, so I have got a big incentive."

In the men's compound, Duncan Busby completed a good year with an 8-6 victory over Chris White in the final.

"It rounds off a good season for me," he said. "The $1,000 (£625) prize money is a welcome bonus too."

The new scoring system is being introduced formally next year by the International Archery Federation (Fita), but Britain is the first country to adopt the system in competition.

Each archer fires three arrows in each end and the person with the highest aggregate score picks up two points, while a tied end sees both archers earn one point.

The scores are cleared at the conclusion of each end, so each set of three becomes a mini-match in its own right.

If the archers are tied at the end of their match, a three-arrow nearest-the-middle shoot-off decides the winner.
