Vickery came on to score the try that clinched a 23-21 win over South Africa, ending a run of seven defeats.

"He was an exceptional player and has worked with some of the world's best coaches - his knowledge is second to none," Vickery told Five Live Sport.

"I don't see any reason why he can't lead England into the next World Cup and beyond."

Vickery, a World Cup winner in 2003, believes critics are being unduly harsh on Robinson despite the recent record-equalling run of defeats.

"I can go back to my second cap in 1998 under Sir Clive Woodward, when we lost 76-0 against Australia," he said.

"Some of us have short memories - we only ever think about success and the World Cup, but a lot of people don't remember those defeats and losing Grand Slams. Let's put things in perspective.

"If you're going to go to war with someone, I'd want Andy Robinson leading me in."

Vickery only returned to action for his club Wasps early last month after 10 months out following a third back operation.

But after being called up following the defeat to Argentina, his appearance with half an hour left galvanised the crowd and his team-mates, capping his comeback with the winning try.

"Some of the guys were down last week as some of the things in the press were pretty personal to certain individuals," he added.

"But you have to take it on the chin and the great thing for me was that everyone was really determined to work hard and try to get things right.

"I'm not saying it's the start of a new era and everything will be fantastic, but everyone's working hard - and that fills me with a lot of confidence.

"When we get some guys back from injury and bring a few new guys through, for me that's a recipe for success."
