Hole-by-hole: Tiger's round
Hole-by-hole action from Tiger Woods's first round at Muirfield.
Tiger Woods began his Open quest in steady fashion with a one under par 70. Read the hole-by-hole account of his round below.
Hole One: Taking a two-iron, Tiger slices his drive horribly and finds deep rough to the right. He hacks out of the knee-deep grass, leaving himself 70 yards from the green, and then complains that amateur photographers in the crowd are putting him off.
But his approach shot is a delight - stopping dead 10 yards beyond the pin. He has a makeable putt for par, and nails it with ease to open with a par.
Hole Two: Tiger takes a two-iron again and this time finds the very edge of the fairway. His second shot lands 20 feet to the right of the flag and runs gently toward the hole, setting up a birdie chance.
The putt looks in all the way - but tickles the rim and stays up. It's another par for Tiger.
Hole Three: Woods takes a three-iron at this 378-yard par four and finds the fairway to the right. His second stops dead 10 feet beyond the pin. He's finding his rhythm.
But Tiger underestimates the slope on the green and leaves his putt short. It's another missed birdie chance - and he's not happy with that.
Hole Four: Solid off the tee again, Woods once again sets up a birdie chance with a fine approach, only to watch his putt slide agonisingly wide.
Hole Five: At the first par five, Woods reaches for his driver for the first time and batters his tee shot some 315 yards down the middle. His second lands on the very edge of the green and sets up an eagle putt, which drifts fractionally wide but seems to set up a certain birdie.
That putt drops in and Tiger is on his way.
Hole Six: Woods looks at this par four, 468-yard hole and pings a two iron down the middle of the fairway. He then fires an eight iron to the heart of the green and raps a birdie putt fractionally past the cup. He is left with what looks like a simple six-footer for par - but to gasps from the crowd, it kisses the edge of the hole and wanders on.
It's Tiger's first bogie, and he slips back to even par. Hole Seven: There is a glimmer of frustration on Tiger's face as another birdie putt slides by.
Woods finds the heart of the green at this tricky par three but has to be content with a tap-in par. Hole Eight: Woods' iron finds the centre of the fairway and his second plops safely onto the putting surface.
But it will take a wonderful putt to land a birdie - he's still 20 yards from the pin - and although the length is perfect, the direction is a touch off and Tiger has to settle for a par. Hole Nine: Tiger senses a birdie chance on this par four and looks good after his drive. His second is over-hit and a possible eagle putt, although looking good all the way, dives right at the last moment.
But that birdie is guaranteed and Tiger is back on track. Hole 10: Tiger takes his driver for only the second time - and finds rough on the right. He hacks out of the thick stuff well, but then attempts to run the ball onto the green and catches the fringe - leaving him with an awkward putt for par.
Once again he turns away in disappointment as it comes up short having looked good. A shot is gone and Tiger slips back. Hole 11: Clearly frustrated, Woods steps onto the tee and lets rip. He goes left but safely so, and then clips in a splendid second to ste up a birdie putt from eight feet.
Confidence restored, he steps up and eases it home to get himself back on track. Hole 12: Tiger goes for a sensible approach and takes a six iron to safety, setting up a second which he flies to within ten feet.
He bends the birdie putt towards the cup and can barely believe his eyes when it kisses the rim and dribbles wide. Hole 13: On this par three, Tiger senses an opportunity to hit back.
But his tee shot leaves him with too much to do, and his birdie putt comes up a foot short. Hole 14: On this par four, 448-yarder, Tiger again opts for safety above length with his drive. His second is a beauty, a relaxed swing that lands the ball on the upslope, allowing it to roll gently towards the pin.
But once again - it's the story of Tiger's round - his putt slides wide by a tiny margin, and he's forced to settle for yet another par. Hole 15: A long, raking drive from Tiger sails out to the left, giving him the ideal angle to approach the pin. He puts a little too much mustard on his second and goes beyond the pin - and then makes the mistake of not giving the putt enough.
It comes up short and, to muted applause, a disconsolate-looking Tiger taps in for par. Hole 16: Woods cannot find the extra gear he wants.
Again a strong drive and solid second set up a tough but baggable birdie, but the ball will not drop. Birdie again.
Hole 17: Tiger's drive slices into the rough on the right. He slashes out and somehow his ball skids between two fairway bunkers to leave him in decent shape.
His approach leaves him a 13-footer uphill to pick up a shot, but the magic has not quite been there and he has to settle for par. Hole 18: Tiger winds up and hits a perfect iron shot 280 yards of the tee. His second bounces just through the green, leaving him with a tricky chip which he plays beautifully to nail a good par.
He finishes the day with a one under par 70 to leave himself well-placed for the remaining three days.
