The 30-year-old moved to New Road from Leicestershire last year and proved a success in his first season,

He marked his Championship debut with a century against Gloucestershire and scored more than 1,200 first-class runs, plus 800 in one-day competitions.

"I am confident Ben will take us to new heights and lead us with great success," said Director Cricket Tom Moody.

"The club feels that the time is right to move forward with the captaincy of the team and Ben has all the attributes as a leader to take us to the next level.'

The decision to relieve Hick of the captaincy after three years was a surprise.

He led them to promotion in the one-day Norwich Union League, but they remain in Division Two of the County Championship after finishing fourth, just two points out of the promotion places.

Explaining the decision, the club said they wanted Hick to concentrate on his batting in the final two years of his contract.

"I know Graeme was disappointed not to continue in the job but I have spoken to him and he has assured me I have his full support.

"I have no doubt he will continue to be a huge asset to the side as he has been throughout his career with the club," Smith commented.
