McEnroe replaced by younger brother
![]() Patrick McEnroe: Expected to be named as US captain
Patrick McEnroe is to succeed elder brother John as captain of the US Davis Cup team.
The move was announced by the US Tennis Association at a press conference on Wednesday. The 34-year-old has worked as a tennis analyst for the sports channel since 1997. John McEnroe, who replaced Tom Gullikson in September 1999, resigned as captain on 20 November. He was frustrated with the format of the global team competition. Less successful His 14-month reign was the shortest by a US captain in 37 years. The biggest problem in McEnroe's time as captain was his inability to persuade the top two Americans - Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras - to make themselves available for the competition for most of the year. Despite the lack of big-name players, he managed to guide the US to the semi-finals, where they were whitewashed 5-0 by eventual champions Spain. Patrick McEnroe does not come close to matching the success of his older brother, especially in Davis Cup. He won just one singles title during his career and his experience in Davis Cup consisted of four doubles matches, starting in 1993. He won three of them.
