Llanelli go on rampage

Caerphilly 6-54 Llanelli

Llanelli ran in 10 tries against bottom club Caerphilly in Tuesday night's Welsh-Scottish League clash to move joint top of the table with a game in hand.

The Scarlets, boosted by Swansea's defeat of leaders Neath, went for tries in the hope their final try count might be decisive, but now just need to win the final match at Cardiff on Friday to lift the title.

Llanelli, twice former champions, gave up attempts at converting tries after their first three as they took a 24-6 lead into the interval.

The visitors, who started with nine internationals and four on the bench, cut loose in the second half, scoring three tries in four minutes between the 70th and 74th minutes.

  Scoring details:
Caerphilly (6) 6:
Pens:
L. Griffiths 2.
Llanelli (24) 54:
Tries:
B. Davies 2, M. Jones 3, L. Davies 2, Finau, Wyatt 2.
Cons: C. Bowen 2.
Att: 2,500

Wing Mark Jones finished with three, while centre Leigh Davies, full-back Barry Davies and lock Chris Wyatt each scored two. The other came from Tongan wing Salesi Finau.

Caerphilly, who lost 62-18 at Llanelli in March, battled valiantly but their only reward was two penalties from outside-half Lyndon Griffiths.

The bottom club, who must play off against the Welsh First Division champions at the end of the month to decide whether they stay up or are relegated, had no effective answer to Llanelli's pace and power.

Skipper David Hawkins at centre tried valiantly, bringing off a great tackle near the interval and producing a great break early in the second half before Llanelli got down to business.
