Glasgow stroll to victory
Tommy Hayes returned to action for Glasgow
Ebbw Vale 18-37 Glasgow
Glasgow swept Ebbw Vale aside at Eugene Cross Park, notching up five tries. The Steelmen had been hoping to end the season on a high note despite being second from bottom in the Welsh-Scottish League. And after today's disappointing reverse, they will be desperate to put in a good showing against basement club Caerphilly in next week's final game.
< Tommy Hayes kicked two penalties and two conversions, while his replacement Calvin Howarth also popped over a conversion kick. Ebbw Vale fought hard up front, but lacked fluency while their defensive work was poor. Centre Rhys Shorney and Wales prop Iestyn Thomas at least managed to grab second-half tries, while full-back Gareth Cull topped 300 points in all games this season by kicking two penalties and a conversion. Glasgow took just 20 seconds to score their first try. From the kick-off, the visitors caught the Vale defence napping and centre Alan Bulloch easily rounded his marker to put Glen Metcalfe over for the try which Hayes converted. Cull kicked a 52-metre penalty on five minutes, but Glasgow looked by far the better side. Macfadyen underlined their superiority, bursting over for a 21st-minute try. Hayes, who had kicked a 9th-minute penalty, converted. The visitor's flanker was on hand again in the 34th minute to cross after splendid approach work by hooker and skipper Gordon Bulloch. Vale tried hard to cut the arrears, but could not complain at the result.
