Edinburgh crush Cardiff
Marcus di Rollo storms throug the Cardiff defence
Edinburgh demolished Cardiff at Meadowbank Stadium
Edinburgh 32-10 Cardiff

Edinburgh stepped up their Welsh-Scottish League revival as they celebrated their debut at Meadowbank Stadium with a convincing victory.

It was another miserable trip north of the border for Cardiff, who suffered a major setback in their bid to reclaim the championship crown.

The home side made up for wasting a string of early chances by stunning the visitors with two touchdowns in quick succession.

They drew first blood in the 24th minute when an up and under by Chris Paterson created panic.

Brendan Laney put in another good display
It was pouched by Iestyn Harris - only for Paterson to pin him down and Simon Taylor to claim the ball and send centre Kevin Utterson over.

The conversion was from a tricky angle, however Duncan Hodge made it look simple.

Derrick Lee snatched the second score three minutes later in the wake of a mazy dash by Marcus di Rollo and this time Hodge was left with the easiest possible kick from straight in front of the posts.

Edinburgh kept up the momentum and stretched their advantage with a penalty from Hodge in the 39th minute - but there was still time for the visitors to break their duck as Harris replied in identical fashion.

Craig Smith has too much power for his opponent
Any prospect of a fightback was snuffed out when former All Blacks skipper Todd Blackadder plunged over. Hodge landed the extra points from a wide angle.

He then added a penalty before Cardiff at last breached the Edinburgh defence, with substitute Nick Robinson scything through and Harris converting.

Another replacement, David Officer, had the last word with Edinburgh's fourth touchdown.

  • There was better news for Cardiff's Under-21s, who were crowned Welsh League champions on Saturday after defeating Bridgend 26-20 at the Brewery Field.

Having lost only twice in league fixtures this season - and unbeaten in all other matches - the Cardiff youngsters now have a chance of a League and Cup double.

They return to the Brewery Field next Wednesday evening to play Neath in the WRU Under-21 Cup Final (kick-off 7.15pm).
