Jaguar acting team boss Tony Purnell has told reporters that last year's R3 "shouldn't have been allowed out of the factory".

Jaguar struggled in 2002, and Niki Lauda and the team's design heads have since left.

"You can't have a dog of a car which has embarrassing things that anybody with a little bit of engineering commonsense would never have allowed out of the factory," said Purnell.

"That's just barking.

"So we are hoping for this year that the car's respectable and that the team's respectable and that we don't make any statements which aim a double-barrelled shotgun at our feet."

Australian driver Mark Webber added: "I would be very surprised if we don't generate a serious amount of respect this year.

"I couldn't wish to be anywhere else at the moment."

Italian Giorgio Pantano is in the frame to become Jordan's F1 test driver thanks to an agreement with the Super Nova Formula 3000 team.

Jordan appointed Super Nova, the most successful team in F3000 history, as their official junior team on Monday.

Team boss David Sears said the initiative would allow a crossover of sponsors and drivers.
