Rangers' David Weir sympathises with Smith's successor
Weir captained Rangers to their first trophy of the season on Sunday
Rangers captain David Weir does not envy the task of whoever takes over from Walter Smith, should the manager leave the Glasgow club this summer.
Smith's nine-man side beat St Mirren 1-0 on Sunday to claim the Co-Operative Insurance Cup, but Weir is wary of any talk of a domestic treble.
"It's not an accident - the gaffer is very good at what he does," said Weir. "He knows the game inside out.
"I would pity the guy who gets the job next if he steps down."
Kenny Miller scored the only goal in Sunday's match after Kevin Thomson and Danny Wilson had been dismissed by referee Craig Thomson.
Smith spent the remainder of the game on the touchline shouting instructions to his players before Miller's winner six minutes from the end.
We're so far away from the treble, that it's folly to talk about it or try to predict it
David Weir
"He was just getting the message over to us on how he wanted us to play and, when we got our opportunity, we took it.
"The gaffer would be the first to say he doesn't win the game for us, but he certainly gives us every opportunity to win the game.
"Sunday was a great example of that - he's passionate and I don't think he would be in the job for as long as he has been and how successful he has been.
"But he hides it well - and that's part of his demeanour and part of what makes him a success."
Despite Rangers' 10-point lead in the league title race and the Co-operative Insurance Cup already in the bag, Weir is reluctant to discuss any notion of another treble making its way to Ibrox at the end of the season.
"We're so far away from the treble, that it's folly to talk about it or try to predict it," said Weir.
