Gary Roberts' future at Crewe is once again in doubt after the midfielder failed to turn up for Saturday's friendly victory over Hull City.
The 21-year-old has also not reported for training this week and has not contacted anyone at the club.
First-team coach Steve Holland told BBC Radio Stoke: "I will give Gary the opportunity to explain himself.
"But given his record, and the fact he has not notified anyone that he needed to be away, it's not a good sign."
Roberts was transfer-listed at the end of last season after a number of disciplinary problems and has spent much of the summer training alone.
A proposed move to Cardiff City collapsed which, coupled with the fact he has not been granted a squad number by Holland, prompted Roberts to declare his willingness to work hard and include himself in Crewe's pre-season.
However, this latest setback looks to have ended any chance that he had of working his way back into Holland's plans.
