Glamorgan cricket manager Matthew Maynard says his squad have done themselves proud with an unbeaten home record in the NatWest Pro40 league.

He was speaking as the county wait to see whether rivals in the promotion race slip up.

"We asked the lads to put ourselves in a position where we could be in a play-off or in second and they've done that. It's out of our hands now."

Glamorgan must now hope that either Kent or Yorkshire lose on Saturday.

After two seasons in the doldrums, Maynard is hoping the county can finish with a bang in the 40-over format- which is being scrapped after the 2009 season.

"There's only one more year of the Pro40 but if we have a good year and win it- or win division two - it'll be a nice send-off for the lads."

"The beauty of it is there's still a lot more room for improvement. There's guys who haven't had good years but the side is doing better - there's some belief coming back into the side but it takes time."

Glamorgan's improvement in limited-overs cricket during the summer has been based round home performances- remaining unbeaten on Welsh soil in the Twenty20 and Pro40 competitions.

It would be nice if we could get into that play-off - hopefully we'll get a bit of luck

Surrey, Warwickshire and Derbyshire were all comfortably beaten in Cardiff after struggling while batting second under the floodlights.

"We said the ultimate aim is to make this place (the Swalec Stadium) a real fortress for us. It's taken us a little while to get used to the habits of the ground because it has changed its characteristics since the new development but we're getting there" said Maynard.

Glamorgan could even earn automatic promotion if Kent lose against leaders Essex and Yorkshire go down at bottom side Northants- but must hope the weather doesn't wash out their rivals' games to hand them a point.

"It would be nice if we could get into that play-off - hopefully we'll get a bit of luck and people might turn them (Kent and Yorkshire) over" added wicketkeeper Mark Wallace. "But we're happy with what we've done and what will be, will be".

Meanwhile Glamorgan have confirmed they're in talks over the return of South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs for next season.

Gibbs is their top target whether or not he remains in his country's squad - but if he does finish the international game and plays as Glamorgan's first Kolpak registration, it would leave the door open to recruit a fast bowler as well.

It has been confirmed that 24-year-old all-rounder Richard Grant, whose contract is up shortly, is being allowed to talk to other counties.

But the future of 37-year-old captain David Hemp remains up in the air despite lying second in the championship averages. No decision is expected until after the season finally draws to a close on 27 September.
