Inter-insular boxing has returned

Matt Jennings versus Tony Conquest
Jennings lost on a split decision to Conquest

Six Channel Island champions were named as the Inter-insular Boxing Championships were contested for the first time in 50 years on Saturday.

Guernsey took three of the titles, Jersey two and Alderney one.

In the big fight of the night Guernsey cruiserweight Matt Jennings lost to London's Tony Conquest after a split decision from the judges.

Jennings told BBC Guernsey: "It could have gone either way it depends what the judges were looking for."

"He had a bit more variety in shots and the judges might have been a bit more impressed by that," said Jennings.

"I'm not disappointed I think it was a good fight and amateur boxing are winners just for stepping through those ropes."

Conquest's coach Jimmy Bush was anything but enthusiastic about the result as he said it should have been declared a more convincing victory.

Bradley Watson versus Ricky Pryor

"When someone goes out and gives a kid a boxing lesson for four rounds and the other judge goes the other way... it felt as if we'd been cheated in a way," said Bush.

"[But] it was overall a very good tournament."

Alderney's Chris Sumner took the first Channel Island bout of the night against Guernsey's Tom Muander.

Sarnian Adam Baker won the first Guernsey versus Jersey bout against Tom Frame on a split decision.

Caesarean Shane Goggin was given the win by the all judges against Alderney's Dave Chadnay.

James Woolnough versus Boyd Monroe

Alex Begbie, from Jersey, was the first to admit "it could have gone either way on the day" in his split decision win over Guernsey's Alan Myes which was unpopular with the home crowd.

Guernsey flyweight Bradley 'Glamour Boy' Watson knocked out Ricky Pryor from Jersey.

The last Channel Island bout of the night was a light-middleweight bout which saw Guernsey's James Woolnough follow in his grandfather's footsteps as he beat Jersey's Boyd Monroe by unanimous decision.

"It is a really great feeling to win the Channel Island title at home with all the fans, absolutely on top of the world. My [late] grandfather won the Channel Island title in 1959... it's excellent to do it again for him."
