Northampton Town have signed promotion-winning Oxford United captain Elliott Moore on an 18-month deal.

The League One relegation battlers, who had a free weekend due to their FA Cup first round elimination, have contracted the 6ft 5in (1.95m) centre back until the summer of 2027.

England Under-20 international Moore, who came through the youth ranks at Leicester City, skippered the Us when they went up to the Championship in 2023-24 via the play-offs.

The 28-year-old never played a first-team game for Leicester but spent two seasons on loan with OH Leuven in the Belgian second division before joining Oxford in 2019.

He made over 240 appearances for them but left by mutual consent ahead of the transfer deadline in the summer and has been without a club since.

In a club statement, external, Cobblers manager Kevin Nolan said: "His pedigree and experience speaks for itself. He is a very good age, and he has experience of success at this level and of playing recently in the Championship.

"He is a leader, a very good character, a physical presence at both ends of the pitch and his influence on and off the pitch at Oxford was huge.

"We believe that defensively he can help us keep clean sheets and also offer an attacking threat at set plays at the other end of the pitch as well."
