Ukraine talks move to US

Newsday

Available for 18 days

The White House has confirmed that President Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff will meet Ukraine's top negotiator on Thursday to discuss Russia's reaction to the US-backed peace plan. Mr Witkoff met President Putin on Tuesday for talks the Kremlin said had been productive but which did not secure a breakthrough. On Newsday we've been looking at how Africans from across the continent have been recruited to Russian forces. Ukraine says some 1,400 citizens from 36 African countries are fighting for the Russians. We speak to the majority chief whip in the Kenyan parliament to ask what's being done to secure the safe return of his country's citizens. Fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has pushed more than 12 million people to flee their homes since the conflict began in 2023. Today we interview a spokesperson for the Sudan Founding Alliance, known as TASIS, which is led by the RSF leader, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. US President Donald Trump has continued to lambast America's Somali community, calling them 'garbage' and not wanted in the US. His disparaging comments came as immigration authorities were reported to be planning an enforcement operation targeting the large Somali community in Minnesota. We get a view on the comments from Omar Fateh, a Minnesota State Senator and of Somali origin.
