In her words: "A child is the perfect gift.

"In Jamaica a child doesn't just belong to the mother and father but also to the uncles, aunties, grandparents and godparents. It is the job of the whole community to help nurture the children.

"Child rearing is the most important role we will ever play in life and we should never take it for granted.

"You receive training for every job in life yet parenting is the most important job we will ever have to do and we receive no training."

Merle says that in her lifetime she would love to see some training for all potential parents.
