Reservoir 'plug holes' roar again as drought ends

Spectacular "plug holes" at a reservoir in Derbyshire have been filmed draining water after heavy rain.

The openings - technically known as shaft spillways - regulate water levels on Ladybower by letting out water into tunnels under the dam when the reservoir becomes full.

It is evidence of the see-saw weather of 2025, which saw a drought declared after England's driest start to the year since 1976 and the hottest summer on record.

By contrast the Environment Agency confirmed the East Midlands saw 218% of the long-term average of rainfall in November - the wettest since 1871 - and the region was officially moved out of drought status earlier this week.
