John Lydon, the former Sex Pistols frontman, has tucked into his first taste of a Black Country classic - orange chips.

Lydon, also known by his former stage name Johnny Rotten, was in Bilston on Thursday for a sold-out show at The Robin with his group Public Image Ltd - which he formed in 1978 after the Sex Pistols split.

The singer-songwriter requested fish and chips from popular nearby chippy Major's after the venue's boss Frances Tranter told him they were "the best in the world".

Lydon said: "The chips are the same colour as my jumper - orange. I didn't think it was possible to make fish and chips even more unhealthy, but Bilston has found a way."

That said, Londoner Lydon described the fish and chips he ordered as some of the best he had ever eaten, adding he had "never seen anything like them".

Mr Tranter said he suggested the "local delicacy" after Lydon asked whether there were any good restaurants or takeaways in town.

The singer-songwriter will return to the Black Country on 29 December when Public Image Ltd play at Wulfrun Hall in Wolverhampton.

While individual premises' tactics may vary, orange chips are thought to be dipped in a batter with added turmeric or paprika to give them their distinctive hue.
