Dads reluctant to accept help, says support group
BBCA single dad who runs a support group for fathers in Coventry has said there is a "reluctance" in men to admit they need help.
Cov Roots, led by Gaz Olden, a recovering alcoholic, offers weekly sessions.
Recent fundraising and donations will help members struggling to make ends meet to deal with the costs of childcare and Christmas.
Mr Olden said the group was appealing for further funds "to help any single dads struggling at this time of year".
Cov Roots meets every Monday at Old Coventrians Rugby Club on Tile Hill Lane, after initially starting off as an outdoor activity group.
Mr Olden said the group was looking for more members, but felt there was a hesitancy to join.
"There's a reluctance to step forward and ask for help," he said. "It's bad enough as a man that you feel like you're letting your kids down but it's even worse having to step forward and admit it publicly and accept the help.
"This year, many fathers in our community are facing the heartbreaking reality of not being able to afford Christmas presents for their children."
"At Roots, we believe no parent should feel that pain. So [this Christmas] isn't just about celebration - it's about giving hope."
The group is holding an event on 14 December to help raise funds.
"We're raising money and collecting gifts to help those dads who are struggling, so their children can still experience the magic of Christmas morning," Mr Olden said.
"Every donation, every gift, and every bit of support helps Roots continue to grow stronger, deeper, and wider across our community. Because when men support each other, whole families flourish.
"Together, we can help make this Christmas one of kindness, hope, and connection."
