An appeal has been launched to find the owner of a lost wedding ring after the item was found in the middle of a busy shopping centre.

James Treadwell was shopping with his sister-in-law at Birmingham's Bullring when the pair spotted a hallmarked platinum band on the floor on Saturday afternoon.

The piece of jewellery is engraved with the owner's first name and an initial, as well as the date of their nuptials.

Mr Treadwell, who is a criminology professor at Staffordshire University, took to social media to try and reunite the owner with the ring in time for Christmas.

"I know it's really quite expensive and I suspect someone is very much missing it," he said.

The criminologist added: "I thought, I've got a bit of a social media presence, with Christmas coming up let's see if we can reunite this ring with its owner."

The ring, which has been described as small and believed to have belonged to a woman, was found on the ground floor of the shopping centre.

Speaking to BBC Radio WM, Mr Treadwell appealed to listeners for them to get in touch with him via X, formerly known as Twitter, if they know the owner of the lost jewellery.

His initial post has amassed more than 173,00 views and has been reposted more than 3,300 times.
