Arrest after man and woman found seriously injured

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after two people in their 60s were found "seriously injured".

Emergency services were called to a property on Durham Street in Elswick, Newcastle, at about 18:45 GMT on Friday after reports a man and woman had been assaulted.

Both suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospital, where the woman remains in a critical condition with a head injury.

Northumbria Police said a man in his 30s remained in custody.

The force described the condition of the injured man as stable.

Det Ch Insp Mark Atherton said there would be a continued police presence in the area for some time.

"This is a serious incident which has resulted in two people sustaining serious injuries," he said.

"I would like to reassure our communities that we are carrying out extensive enquires to understand what has happened."
