Surrey County Council is proposing to make more streets in Walton into 20mph zones

A consultation on proposed speed limits, parking restrictions and street works in Walton-on-Thames has opened.

Surrey County Council is proposing new parking bays and an expansion of the existing Thames Street and Manor Road permit scheme.

Residential streets near Bridge Street, Manor Road and Felix and Franklyn Roads could see 20mph restrictions if the changes go ahead.

Lowering speeds will "make it easier and more pleasant for residents to walk, wheel and cycle" as well as improving safety, the council said.

According to the local authority, 81% of fatal crashes with pedestrian and 69% of cycling casualties in Surrey occur on 30mph roads.

The council said the lower limit could reduce crashes, encourage walking and cycling, and cut air and noise pollution.

The proposals follow two earlier rounds of public engagement, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Other changes being proposed include new road crossings, pavement resurfacing and new planting.

The consultation on the council's website closes on 14 December.
