Cadent will be replacing almost a mile's worth of gas pipes near Woodbridge on the A12

A busy road will see essential works for nearly five months to replace almost a mile of pipes.

Cadent will be carrying out the work on the A12 near Woodbridge, Suffolk, between 5 January and 22 May.

It will involve replacing the current metallic gas pipes, which measure 1,500 metres (4,921ft) and were installed more than 65 years ago, with new pipes.

Cadent said it had been in touch with those affected by the works, and residents and businesses were invited to attend various public information events.

The work is part of a £90m investment this financial year, which will see more than 300km of gas pipes upgraded across the East of England

The new pipes will be made of a tough plastic, which Cadent said would last for decades, "future proofing the local network".

"As well as ensuring a reliable and safe supply of gas now, it will also help get the local gas network ready for more cleaner gases, like biomethane," a spokesperson added.

The work will be carried out in phases with various road closures, lane restrictions and other traffic management measures.

Public information events will take place on 15 December and 6 January in Throughfare in Woodbridge for people to learn more.
