'Superhero' boy burned saving sister, 2, from firework

An 11-year-old has been hailed a "superhero" by his mum after saving his two-year-old sister from a rogue firework.

Olly needed hospital treatment for burns after pushing Daisy out of the way as the firework toppled over and flew straight towards a crowd at a bonfire night display in Pontypool, Torfaen.

His mum Charlotte Baggot described how everyone "started running" while Olly "shouted 'run' to his brother and then spun his little sister around and pushed her towards me".

The firework "landed in his hood" so Charlotte and others "ripped his coat off" but he still suffered burns to his head, neck and hands.

"He's very protective over his little sister," she told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast.

Olly was treated at the scene by a first aider before being taken to hospital where he remained overnight.

Charlotte said the "freak accident" happened so quickly.

"It went in slow motion but so fast at the same time. It's all a bit of a blur," Charlotte said.

"I don't think he realises what a great thing he's done," she added.

"It just came so naturally to him. He's just so brave. I'm so glad it wasn't worse than what it is.

"I do think he's a little superhero, I really do."

Olly, who plays in pipe band Piping Hot Cwmbran, was due to perform at his hometown's Remembrance Sunday parade but lay a wreath on their behalf.
