Plans to redevelop former Peacocks store approved
GooglePlans to redevelop a vacant city centre shop unit have been approved.
Mohammed Billal, of Gujjar Investments Limited, applied to Peterborough City Council for planning permission to install three new shopfronts at the former Peacocks store on Bridge Street, which shut in August.
According to the proposal, the unit will be reconfigured to create two new shopfronts facing Bridge Street - and another at the back of the site on St Peters Road.
Planning documents stated: "This will have the benefit of enlivening the currently poor character of the rear of the premises which is currently a dead space with little activity or natural surveillance."
"This will ensure that the vitality of the principally commercial element of Bridge Street and the Conservation Area is preserved and reflective of the recent trend towards smaller retail footprints," the planning document added.
The works will also include the installation of new windows and some minor internal layout alterations.
No objections to the plans were received during the consultation stage.
A council case officer report stated: "The proposed scale and design of the alterations are deemed appropriate and proportionate and would not cause unacceptably adverse impacts upon the character and appearance of the site or the Conservation Area and a condition would be applied to secure materials."
Work on the site must begin within three years of planning permission being granted.
