Albert recalls it was 1944 on a Sunday morning at 6.00am. He was based at Plaistow Fire Station at the time. He had a call to a flat above a shop to rescue an injured civilian. He was the first fire engine on the scene. A V2 rocket had hit the building. Albert got the ladder up to the window above the shop, strapped the injured man to the stretcher and lowered him down the ladder. The officer in charge wanted to nominate Albert for a commendation but he refused, saying he could not have done it without the help of his crew.
