My late mother was a member of St John Ambulance and - with other family members - joined ARP in the 30s.

Near the outbreak of war her ARP unit found itself short of personnel for Rescue Squads - an exclusively male preserve. My mother readily volunteered to fill the void and served from that point until being stood down.
