There it was after 61 years. The 16ft. retaining wall on top of which was the Commioners bungalow and tennis court. The only road from Dimapur to Kohima ran alongside and a 300ft drop theother side.
At the height of the battle the wounded lay on stretchers below the wall until they could be evacuated. The Japs had virtually captured Kohima, the doorway to Delhi. At the eleventh hour tanks were bought in to get up the driveway to the tennis court. Our Stuart got stuck and had to be pulled up. Then a a Lee tank got up and with its75mmgun at point blank range finally exterminated all the Japs in and around the site and in the Bakery.
The first defeat of the Japs. This last phase of the Battle saved Kohima. But the mopping up remained and took another three weeks before the road to Imphal was re-opened after 3 months.
