The Evil of the Daleks
Episode Four contact sheet
Kemel, the Turkish wrestler, advances on Jamie and grips him in a crushing bear hug.
With enormous effort Jamie struggles free, but is thrown to the floor.
Kemel readies himself for another assault, but Jamie sticks his leg out and trips him up. Kemel goes flying into a wall.
Kemel collapses in a heap, surrounded by fragments of a suit of armour.
Jamie escapes through an open door, closing it firmly behind him. While Kemel is recovering, Jamie grabs a sword off the wall.
Jamie hears Kemel lumbering to his feet, and braces himself for the next confrontation.
Kemel charges through the door, but Jamie deftly steps aside. Unable to slow down, Kemel flies straight out of a window.
Kemel rolls off the roof and breaks his fall by clinging onto a gutter.
Jamie clambers out of the window and onto the roof. Seeing Kemel beneath him, he finds some rope and lowers it down.
Kemel hauls himself onto the roof and Jamie extends his hand, helping Kemel back through the window. The two men collapse, exhausted, on the floor.
On the first floor of the house, a Dalek glides along a corridor, ready to initiate the next phase of the test.
Kemel silently expresses his gratitude to Jamie for saving his life, and a mutual respect is established.
The Dalek arrives at Victoria's old room in the west wing of the house. It clutches a monogrammed handkerchief, which it deposits on the floor.
Using the rope, Kemel lowers Jamie down to the first floor. Jamie explores Victoria's old room, soon spotting the handkerchief. Kemel follows Jamie and shakes his head, but Jamie fails to understand what he is trying to tell him. Jamie reaches for the handkerchief, unwittingly activating a large blade that springs out of the wall.
Kemel spots the blade, pushing his friend clear.
The blade swings down, and Jamie looks back in horror.
Kemel and Jamie head back up the stairs, carefully observed by a Dalek that lurks in the shadows.
The Doctor watches recent events from the work room, pointing out that Jamie saved Kemel's life. The Dalek dismisses such behaviour as human weakness.
He tells the Dalek that part of the human factor should include mercy. The Dalek says nothing, impassively observing the progress of the silver wire that records Jamie's thought patterns.
Waterfield is aghast to discover Toby's body.
A Dalek explains matter-of-factly that the intruder was destroyed. Waterfield's first thought is to tell the Doctor what has happened.
The Dalek orders Waterfield not to tell the Doctor, and Maxtible begs him not to antagonise their ‘friends' any further.
The Dalek orders Waterfield to hide the remains of the dead human intruder. Maxtible covers the body with a sheet while Waterfield continues to fret. The Dalek orders them to dispose of the body before it returns to the time cabinet.
A dazed Waterfield tells Maxtible that as soon as he has rescued his daughter from the Daleks he intends to confess everything to the authorities. As Waterfield drags Toby's body away, Maxtible moves to a drawer and retrieves a pistol. He quietly hides the gun in his coat pocket.
Jamie tries to get to know his new friend, but the conversation is one-sided.
He considers recent events, reflecting on how they tried to kill each other before saving each other's lives.
Jamie soon reaches the conclusion that his friend can't talk. Kemel moves over to the window, writing his name in the dust on the ledge.
Kemel points to the VW monogram on the handkerchief and then shows Jamie a flower he retrieves from his belt. Jamie concludes that Victoria gave Kemel the flower.
Jamie asks Kemel if he likes Victoria, and Kemel smiles broadly. Jamie tells Kemel that Victoria is being held prisoner. Kemel indicates that they should try to rescue her together.
The Doctor pores over the Dalek machinery, making calculations. The silver wire continues to record Jamie's thought patterns.
Waterfield and Maxtible carry Toby's body to the stable. An anxious Waterfield pauses, convinced he heard a noise. Maxtible tries to reassure him.
Maxtible reminds him that they are not murderers – it is the Daleks who are the cause of Waterfield's anguish. Waterfield reminds him that they are silent partners in the Daleks' scheme and are equally to blame. Maxtible tells Waterfield to return to his room in the house to try to get some rest. As Waterfield turns his back, Maxtible aims his gun at him.
Maxtible is about to pull the trigger when Terrall jumps on him, grabbing the weapon. Maxtible argues that Waterfield was about to confess everything.
Terrall tells him that Waterfield will not die yet. He tells Maxtible that he will dispose of the body and orders him back to the laboratory.
The Doctor continues his work on the Dalek machinery by programming one of the computers.
Jamie and Kemel look down on a pair of Daleks patrolling a corridor before heading further into the west wing. Jamie brushes past a small glass button, triggering a buzzing noise and a bright light.
A large metal ball swings out from the light. Jamie and Kemel crouch down to keep out of its path.
The Dalek tells the Doctor they do not trust him. It asks him what thoughts he is using for the latest observations. The Doctor explains that Jamie has just used instinct to avoid the latest Dalek trap.
An ancient statue sits beneath the minstrels' gallery.
Victoria is ordered onto the minstrels' gallery, ostensibly for inspection by one her captors.
Beneath the gallery, another Dalek glides past, is eye-stalk sweeping the area for signs of movement.
Jamie and Kemel hide in the shadows, looking up when they hear a noise from the gallery. The Dalek makes Victoria repeat her name. Her voice echoes across the hall. The Dalek then orders her to return to her room. Meanwhile, Kemel grabs a mace off a wall and points to the Daleks, suggesting a diversion while Jamie rescues Victoria. Jamie persuades him to put the heavy weapon back.
Elsewhere, the Dalek asks the Doctor about the significance of the latest thought pattern. The Doctor tells it that Jamie has eschewed a potentially suicidal risk in order to rescue Victoria, and is showing signs of self-preservation – another important human factor.
A furious Terrall drags Mollie into the trophy room and tells her to explain herself. Mollie insists that she heard Victoria's voice echoing from one of the fireplaces, but Terrall insists that Victoria is in Paris.
Ruth is alerted by the sound of Mollie's protestations and asks Terrall what he is doing. Terrall is furious at Mollie for wandering around the house at such a late hour and tells her to go to the sitting room, where Mr Maxtible will decide what to do with her. Ruth quickly comforts the sobbing maid before she leaves.
Ruth asks Terrall what the matter is. His mood appears to change suddenly, and his mild temperament returns.
She asks him to come away with her, before it is too late. He replies that he can't – not yet...
In the laboratory Maxtible tells a Dalek that he has done everything that has been requested of him and now he grows impatient. He reminds the Dalek that it is within his power to jeopardise the entire scheme. The furious Dalek rounds on Maxtible, knocking him to the ground.
Lack of trust.
It orders him to obey the Daleks as Maxtible cowers in terror.
Crawling like a dog, Maxtible begs to be told the secret that was promised to him as a reward for his collaboration. The Dalek tells him that he will eventually learn the most important secret before it returns to the time cabinet.
Maxtible tries to convince himself not to be frightened of the Daleks, but he is interrupted by Ruth, who tells him she heard him talking to someone. He reminds her that she was told to never enter the laboratory.
Ruth is concerned – Arthur Terrall is acting strangely and she is no longer sure of Victoria's whereabouts. Maxtible then tells her why it is important that secrets should be kept.
He takes a piece of metal from a workbench and excitedly explains that the greatest secret of all is the means to transform such worthless metal into gold. Men have sought the secret of alchemy for centuries.
His eyes widen as he begins to imagine what power and influence such knowledge would bring him. And now he is on the verge of discovering the secret, nothing – and nobody – will get in his way.
A Dalek orders Victoria onto the gallery and forces her to repeat her name. When the inspection is over she is ordered back to her room and the Dalek retreats. In the hall, Jamie and Kemel use the rope to lasso another Dalek, sending it plunging into the fireplace. Smoke billows from its damaged casing.
They retrieve the rope and run along the hall until they are beneath the gallery.
Kemel throws the rope up to the gallery, wrapping it round a banister. Jamie climbs the rope until he reaches the gallery. He then helps Kemel to follow him up, hauling him on to the landing as the banister begins to crack. They head for Victoria's room and Jamie calls out to her.
They fail to notice a patrolling Dalek which emerges from the shadows behind them. Beneath the gallery, another Dalek surveys the hall. They are surrounded...
