Are new comedies as funny as old ones?
Zoolander, Hot Fuzz and Anchorman were among recent films to make BBC Culture’s top 100 comedies. Will they stand the test of time alongside Some Like It Hot?
One reason BBC Culture put together its poll of the 100 greatest comedies of all time is because so few humorous films made its list of the 100 greatest films of the 21st Century last year.
Remarkably, 15 of the films that featured in the top 100 comedies list were made since 2000, with the highest ranked film of the new century being Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, at number 33, which didn’t make the 100 greatest films of the 21st Century list at all. One film that did make the list, Toni Erdmann, was released in 2016.
For Talking Movies, Tom Brook looks at how BBC Culture’s comedy poll was put together and how it is that Some Like It Hot came out on top. He then turns his gaze to some of the more recent films to make the list, including Hot Fuzz, which critic Alissa Wilkinson singles out for particular praise.
