What is a kindness chart?

A kindness chart suggests ways for your child to express kindness.

You can hang it up or stick it on the fridge, it can help start a conversation about kindness and considerate behaviour with your little one.

It can also help your child track their acts of kindness over the course of a few days or weeks, which is a great way to boost self-esteem.

A kindness chart is a great way to encourage kind behaviour and thoughtfulness, so your child can:

  • develop empathy and active listening

  • acknowledge other people's feelings

  • learn to help friends and family.

Where can you practise kindness?

Acts of kindness can be done everywhere! Vida the Vet's kindness chart shows five ideas for when you're at home, at school, or outdoors:

At home

  • Share toys with a sibling or friend

  • Tidy your room without being asked

  • Help set the table, clear plates, bake or cook for friends

  • Make a “thank you” card for a teacher, carer, or family member

  • Say what we are grateful for at bedtime

At school

  • Pack an extra snack to share with a friend

  • Offer to play with someone new in the playground

  • Save a seat for a friend at storytime or lunch

  • Ask a classmate how they are feeling today

  • Help tidy up the classroom toys or books

Outdoors

  • Make or fill up a bird feeder

  • Help with the recycling

  • Help water plants at home or in the garden

  • Make a bug hotel or hedgehog shelter

  • Leave out fresh water for pets or wildlife
