Ambridge has a new superstar – and it wasn’t on the bill at Loxfest. Susan’s hair caused something of a sensation in the lead-up to Jennifer’s cocktail party, prompting a huge amount of speculation about Fabrice’s creation.

As for the party itself, listeners expected a few more fireworks, though Carol proved to be a cracker with her comments to Susan and her words of support for Peggy.

Meanwhile, “Man of the Year 2014” Jazzer was widely praised in contrast to Roy who many predicted would be “out on his ear” in the wake of a possibly disastrous Loxfest.

Here’s my pick of the listener discussions between 14 and 20 August 2014.

As Susan’s new do was unveiled to much delight – and there were many requests to see photos – it wasn’t all schadenfreude from listeners.

I am dying to know what Susan's hair actually looks like! "Lady Ga Ga" according to one comment at the Party. What is the colour? I hope it is as ghastly as she is. (Pat villagedweller on The Archers blog)

A sight gag on radio; a kitchen party duller than dishwater; a farmer and his prize bull; a working class clown with a heart of gold - love it, love it all. (Yvette Walker on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

Oh Susan. Never before have I so regretted that radio has no imagery. What I wouldn't give to see this hairdo. #thearchers (@cheeahs on Twitter)

One of the joys of radio is the fact that we can't see Susan's hair. We can all imagine it for ourselves. No photo could possibly live up to the horrific vision in my head just now. (Jennifer Robertson on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

Poor Susan, I do feel for her as I was once unfortunate enough to have a mis-communication experience at a hairdressers over a dye job. I have never had my hair dyed since then and am now middle aged and going grey disgracefully! (Susie Wright on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

I can’t understand why susan went to fabrice's to have a cut n colour, she could have had edd and the combine cut (Donna Hope on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

The build-up to Jennifer’s cocktail party had many expecting dramatic scenes, but some came away feeling like the event had a bit of a soggy bottom.

Even Mary Berry would be hard pressed to retain interest. Jennifer in full flow. #kitchen #thearchers (@SueHomeyard on Twitter)

I enjoyed it, sorry. Gentle Archers at its best, sly subtle humour without gunshots or murder. (Lorna Andrew on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

Poor Jenny Darling with her awkward corners and niches. How ever did she cope all these years? Have another caviar blini. #thearchers (@doubleagent73 on Twitter)

Jennifer really is trying too hard! Guests who have not consumed their own body weight in food will not get away until they have. (Chris Walmsley on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

The cocktail party: how frightfully dull. (Sally Ann Russo on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

God Jennifer is unbearable! No-one cares about your steam oven love, and Brian take that waistcoat off you wazzock! Carole however is a dude. (Pamela King on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

Thankfully, Carol was on hand to give proceedings a lift, even if not everyone is pleased at the thought of her moving in to Glebe Cottage.

Thanks @BBCTheArchers for bringing back Carol. Wonderful x #theArchers (@MrsPanad on Twitter)

Carol did two great things - praised Susan's hair and sorted out Peggy. I want to BE her. She's great. (Christine Wilson on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

Come on, Carol. Say something even more sarcastic to Jenny. Please. #thearchers (@psalotti on Twitter)

I'm liking Carol more and more. She wasn't rude about Susan's hair. She is sorting out Hazel. I hope she moves into Glebe Cottage as soon as possible. (Brenda Selwyn on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

Stay, Carole, stay... pretty please, SWs x (Angela McIntosh on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

I'm afraid of Carol renting Glebe. What with her darn puma and wine, she's showing herself now as yet another snobby bore. (Wendy Parry Astor on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

For an 83 year-old she has a lot of barely hidden bile and clearly has a lot of unresolved personal issues.. She hasn't lived in Ambridge for over 30 years but she seems to think she has carte blanche to be snide about everyone and everything in the village (barwick_green on The Archers blog)

It wasn’t just the continuing enjoyment of Carol’s return that was noted, however: there was much relief that Peggy was showing signs of being back to her old self.

Good! Thanks to Carol, the feisty old Peggy is back! #smashHazeltheSlitheen  #thearchers (@archerslistener on Twitter)

Peggy's got quite a lot more oomph about her tonight. #thearchers (@karineldredge on Twitter)

She sounds just like the old Peggy! In think Carol is going to be a breath of fresh air in Ambridge! (Vivienne Byass on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

Wasn't it great to hear Peggy so animated. I liked the way she kept Lillian waiting and then hurried her along? She is obviously now ready to hold her own when Horrid Hazel turns up. (Jean Bell on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

It was a heartwarming episode -I shed a few tears for Peggy after... (Janey Baily on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

It seems Peggy is back . Stick it to Hazel babes (Derek Read on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

Spare a thought for poor Jazzer, though, who was elevated to sainthood thanks to his selfless act of playing Cupid for Fallon and PC Burns.

Saint Jazz of self-sacrificing matchmaker awwwww......... (Jim Walton on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

I love Jazzer. He's put his own thoughts of Fallon to one side, to promote Fallon's happiness with the PC.. (Elaine Masters on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

My admiration of Jazzer has just gone up a notch  #thearchers (@Cindyloveslola on Twitter)

Oh Jazzer, bless you! You are running a close second to Ian for Man of the Year 2014, Ambridge @stiofankenny @BBCTheArchers When do I vote? (@Lol58Milne on Twitter)

Catching up with the Omnibus via podcast, how sweet was Jazza's plan? I liked that. (Ged Robinson on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

Still finding it hard to accept that dear Jazzer is so altruisitic, has such finer feelings. And who will play matchmaker to Jazzer??? (Pauline Stroud on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

If Jazzer was hero of the week then there was no question about who was due a dressing down – even if Roy’s questionable behaviour didn’t dampen everyone’s enthusiasm for Loxfest.

Anybody give me a lift to Loxfest? You can share my tent. (Carrie Gray on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

I am inordinately excited about Lox Fest. Particularly so if there is a chance of Morrissey turning up out of the blue to headline the musical line up. And even if he doesn't it should be fun, fun, fun. And a great move to dragging Ambridge into the twenty-first century. (pauline wallin on The Archers blog)

So Loxfest is going to prove a financial disaster and Roy will be out on his ear! (Jeff Slade on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

If Roy had any glimmer of hope with Lizzypot, invoking the name of Nigel certainly ruined his strawberries (Tim Allsopp on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

Don't play the Nigel card, Roy!! Your arrogance has gone far enough! #KnowYourPlace #TheArchers (@AndromP on Twitter)

Somebody push Roy off the Main Stage #thearchers (@jmcefalas on Twitter)

Time Roy realised Hayley is worth four of Lizzie. (Lindsay Philippa on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

Roy deserves a total disaster, but Lizzie is an Archer and they never have disasters so I expect the Festival Fairy will wave her magic wand and it will all be the most incredible success. (Sue Woods on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
