Andy Murray was unable to break down Federer's game

Andy Murray fans have been left disappointed after he failed to take his first Grand Slam tennis title. Murray lost to world number one Roger Federer at the Australian Open final in Melbourne by three straight sets. The 22-year-old was bidding to become the first Briton for 74 years and the first Scot to win a Grand Slam final. Murray struggled to gain an advantage over Federer and lost 6-3, 6-4, 7-6. The win gave Federer his 16th Grand Slam title. The match ended after a tense third set tie-break which Federer won 13-11. Fans were watching the final across the country and crowds gathered at venues in Dunblane, Murray's home town. Breaking down after the game, an emotional Murray thanked his fans and said: "I'm sorry I couldn't do it for you."

But he conceded that Federer had played the better tennis. He said: "I can cry like Roger, it's a shame I can't play like him." Roger Federer paid tribute to his opponent and said Murray was too good a player not to get a win. The Swiss champion said: "Well done for your incredible tournament. "You played fantastic and you're too good a player not to win a Grand Slam, so don't worry about it." Fred Perry was the last British man to win a major at the 1936 US Open.
