The Vintage Vehicle Club plans to restore its fire engine

One of two fire engines specially built and equipped to deal with liquid metal fires at a nuclear site in Caithness has been donated to enthusiasts. Parts of the tenders at Dounreay were to be stripped and sold off and the rest scrapped. However, one of the machines has been donated to Caithness and Sutherland Vintage Vehicle Club. Chairman Edward Sutherland said the club planned to restore the engine and present it in "show condition". He added: "The club has about 70 members who between them have a varied selection of vehicles and stationary engines. "The fire engine will be a welcome addition to our exhibits." Brought to Dounreay in 1984, the tenders were the only two in the world and carried a graphite-based fire fighting agent. The threat they were built for has since been removed.
