Royal Mail said properties were only removed if they no longer existed

Royal Mail has said some addresses in the Highlands were removed from its postcode database in error.

It said it was an "isolated local mistake" that was being rectified.

Some of those removed were understood to be for holiday homes in small communities, including Applecross in Wester Ross and on Raasay, near Skye.

Royal Mail said the only properties that should be removed were those that no longer existed, were not accessible, or had been abandoned.

A spokesperson said: "Royal Mail does not have a policy to remove addresses not in full time permanent occupation, including holiday homes, from the Postcode Address File.

"The only addresses removed by Royal Mail are those which no longer exist, or which are no longer physically accessible or which are obviously completely unoccupied and abandoned."

The company said there was no evidence of wider problems beyond those in the Highlands.
