Businesses in the south of County Durham are being targeted by bogus fraud squad detectives.
Durham Police said several telephone calls had been made from people claiming to be from the force's cheque and credit card fraud team.
The bogus officers attempted to gain customers' bank details from businesses in the Rushyford and Barnard Castle areas on Tuesday, a spokesman said.
The force is advising people to report all suspicious calls.
