David Beckham stopped to answer questions from Omari and Sukhpreet

School Reporters Omari and Sukhpreet secured a dream first assignment as they got to go backstage at the 2010 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award ceremony at the LG Arena in Birmingham.

The two 13-year-olds, from St John Wall Catholic School in Handsworth, rose to the challenge and proceeded to interview some of the world's top sports stars, including football legends David Beckham and Ryan Giggs, former England cricket captain Andrew Flintoff, 15-time champion jockey Tony McCoy and Europe's Ryder Cup-winning captain Colin Montgomerie.

Here are the pick of their interviews from a memorable night:

Beckham on winning the lifetime achievement award

The former England captain is one of the most famous men on the planet after a career which has seen him play for Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan and LA Galaxy. He talked about his pride at winning the lifetime achievement award at the age of just 35.

McCoy on winning the Grand National

The 15-time champion jockey, who ended the evening as the winner of the prestigious Sports Personality of the Year award with nearly 42% of the public vote, singled out his 2010 Grand National triumph as the highlight of his illustrious career.

Taylor on never being satisfied - despite 15 world titles

Taylor has dominated darts for the last two decades, but the 50-year-old, who was runner-up behind McCoy in the vote, told School Report he was always striving for more success.

Giggs backs Wayne Rooney to rediscover top form

Giggs, who has made more appearances for Manchester United than any player in history, won Sports Personality in 2009. He answered questions about Cristiano Ronaldo's departure from Old Trafford, Wayne Rooney's form and his side's chances in the Premier League.

Flintoff on life after cricket

A larger than life character both on and off the cricket pitch, Flintoff - who won Sports Personality in 2005 - was forced to retire in 2010 after persistent knee trouble. The former England captain said he would have loved to have been part of England's Ashes triumph, and talked about how he began his career in the sport.

Calzaghe turns sights to acting career

The Welshman is another former winner of the Sports Personality award, taking the lion's share of the vote in 2007. Calzaghe, the former super middleweight and light heavyweight world champion, retired in 2009 with an unblemished record of 46 wins from 46 fights. He revealed how he is now turning his attentions to a career in acting and television.

Montgomerie revels in Ryder Cup win

A former world number two, Montgomerie was one of the best Ryder Cup players of all time and captained Europe to a thrilling victory over the United States in 2010. The 47-year-old, who collected the team of the year and coach of the year awards in Birmingham, told School Report his victory as a Ryder Cup captain was a special moment.

Daley aiming for Olympic gold

At the age of just 16, Daley is already one of the best divers in the world with Commonwealth and World titles among the highlights of an impressive CV. Daley took the Young Sports Personality of the Year award for an unprecedented third time, and told the School Reporters that his main aim was to become an Olympic champion.

No more bugs for Christie!

Christie is the only athlete in history to hold the Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth 100m titles at the same time. Now an athletics coach, Christie took time out to take part in I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here and he insisted he got on well with Gillian McKeith, but admitted he did not want to eat any more creepy-crawlies!

Eriksson eyes Premier League return

The former England manager has enjoyed a globe-trotting career since the 2006 World Cup, with roles at Manchester City, Mexico, Ivory Coast, Notts County and his current club Leicester. Eriksson said his main ambition was to get the Foxes back into the Premier League.

Shilton delighted to dance!

With 125 international appearances under his belt, Shilton is England's most-capped player of all time. The former Leicester, Derby and Nottingham Forest goalkeeper took on the challenge of appearing in Strictly Come Dancing, and told School Report he had enjoyed his time in the show.

Westwood on Sports Personality nomination

When Tiger Woods finally lost his status as golf's world number one, it was Britain's Lee Westwood who replaced him at the top of the rankings. A keen Nottingham Forest fan, Westwood said he was honoured just to be nominated as one of the top 10 contenders for the Sports Personality award.

Yorke on life with Man Utd

Dwight Yorke won the Treble with Manchester United after joining them from Aston Villa in 1998, forming a superb partnership with Andy Cole. The Trinidad & Tobago international said his success at Old Trafford was the greatest achievement of his sporting career.
