A new
Equality Act
came into force on 1 October 2010 to prevent discrimination and to promote fairness and equality. The Act combines more than 116 pieces of law relating to equal pay, employment equality, race relations and direct or indirect discrimination. Businesses of all sizes will be required to provide equal opportunities, avoid discrimination and be more transparent about pay. If you are an employee or a small employer and want to know how your workplace will be affected, you can call or e-mail the programme. You may also have a general question about rights at work. What are the rules around working hours, regular breaks and annual leave? Is your working environment safe? Maybe you need information about maternity or paternity issues? Do you want advice about flexible working? Can you arrange time off for parental leave or family emergencies? Where do you stand if your employer is reducing hours or making redundancies? Whatever your question, Paul Lewis and guests were ready to offer advice. Paul Lewis was joined by: • Clive Howard, Partner, Employment, Russell Jones Walker • Lucy McLynn, Partner, Bates Wells & Braithwaite • Sarah Veale, head of equality and employment rights, TUC Presenter: Paul Lewis Producer: Diane Richardson
