The Europeans took the trophy on their home turf

Catherine Zeta Jones and husband Michael Douglas were among the stars at the Celtic Manor Resort, Newport.

The Europeans were led by Ryder Cup hero Colin Montgomerie, while the US team was captained by former Masters champion Mark O'Meara.

Rugby star Gavin Henson, DJ Chris Evans and singer Ronan Keating also played.

Monday's victory was a double celebration for Keating, who was told that his wife had gone into labour as he played his part in a tense winning finale for the home side.

Keating and actor Damien Lewis were up against Michael Douglas and Mark Spitz, and clinched the overall win by 91 points to 89.

Jodie Kidd, Rob Lowe, Ronan Keating and Boris Becker were among the stars who hit the fairways during the two-day event, which was the idea of TV presenters Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly.

Playing opposite her husband, Zeta Jones grew frustrated at her performance at times, prompting team-mate Chris Evans to joke: "Look at the temper on her - what does Michael have to put up with?"

Around 20,000 spectators watched the tournament, although it proved a dangerous spectacle, with four players - Evans, Patrick Duffy, Cheech Marin and Hayley Osment - all hitting people in the crowd.

The contest took place on the Roman Road course of the Celtic Manor Resort, which will host the Ryder Cup in 2010.

As part of the tournament, each competitor nominated a charity to benefit from their efforts.

Jones and Douglas, who have spent part of their summer in Swansea, raised money for the Noah's Ark Appeal.

The charity will use the donation to make inroads into the £300,000 needed to complete the Teenage Cancer Trust Unit at its new hospital in Cardiff, which opened to its first patients in February.
