Rain cuts transport links
Many homes across the region were damaged
The return of heavy rain to Wales just two days after torrential storms caused power cuts and damage to homes has brought renewed disruption to the area.
Stena ferries sailing between west and north Wales and Ireland have been cancelled because of bad weather. The Met Office has warned of heavy rain moving from south to north Wales and has urged motorists to take care in "hazardous" driving conditions.
Tir y Dial, on the Lougher near Swansea, was one of the worst affected places with 87 mm falling in a 24 hour period. BBC Wales' forecaster Derek Brockway said: "The initial storm has now moved towards Holland but there is more trouble brewing out in the Atlantic and that is heading our way." "There will be more heavy rain starting on Monday evening with one to two inches falling through Tuesday evening.
"The bad weather should start in south Wales and move through to the north." During the height of the storm in the early hours of Monday morning 10,000 homes lost power. Western Power Distribution managed to repair the damage and by Monday power was restored. Western Power spokesman Phil Allan said: "We've had staff working through the night in torrential conditions. "We believe that we have now got the best of the situation and everyone will be restored as quickly as possible." Police warned of treacherous road conditions in many areas, particularly at Storey Arms between Merthyr and Brecon. A lorry jack-knifed there at 0700 BST on Monday, and a car slid from the road into a field near the Nantddu Lodge Hotel half an hour later. The Environment Agency said no major rivers had burst their banks, but some culverts and drains had failed to cope with the sheer volume of water. St Richard Gwyn Comprehensive School in Barry was closed on Monday because of flooding in a subway leading to the school.
