Singer Darren Day is to hand over a cheque for £30,000, raised by taking part in a jungle celebrity survivor TV show, to help build a Welsh children's hospital.

The star was the third to be voted off by the public to leave the Australian bush and ITV1's I'm A Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here! in September.

Day raised the money from the proceeds of the audience phoning and texting the show during the 10 days he survived the game, eventually won by DJ Tony Blackburn.

He has chosen to given the money to the Noah's Ark appeal which is raising money for the first children's hospital in Wales.

On Friday, the West End singer is visiting a children's ward in a Cardiff hospital to present the cash.

The Noah's Ark appeal aims to raise £5m to build the initial phase of the hospital on the site of the existing University Hospital of Wales.

It has already won the support of a number of celebrities including Ian Botham, Catherine Zeta Jones, Charlotte Church and Aled Jones.

Zeta Jones and teenage soprano Church joined Botham in Cardiff Bay for the last leg of his marathon 229 mile walk around in Wales in April.

The trek raised £1m towards the appeal and Church also staged her first solo concert in aid of the fund.

Wales is the only country in Europe which does not have a dedicated hospital for young people.

Day's contribution brings the multimillion pound target closer, after a two year fundraising campaign.

When the appeal has achieved its goal, the Welsh Assembly Government has pledged £4.5m to complete the first phase of the hospital.

Day chose to back the fund after hearing about the experience of his girlfriend Adele Ellicott, who is from Newport.

The 22-year-old former model's brother died when he was 11, a victim of a rare illness known as Sudden Death Syndrome.

Her family are keen supporters of the campaign for a children's hospital and are said to be touched by Day's choice of charity.

"I'm delighted I had the opportunity to raise money and awareness for the Noah's Ark campaign," said the star.

"I have given my commitment to the charity to continue to work on their behalf and look forward to the day that Wales has its own children's hospital.

Building work for the hospital is to begin next spring.

Five tenders have been put forward to win the contract for the work and the successful firm will be told at Christmas.

The new hospital will be built close to the existing children's ward at the University Hospital of Wales.

The appeal's director Suzanne Mainwaring said: "Darren joins an elite group of famous supporters of the Noah's Ark appeal.

"He has demonstrated that he is prepared to go to amazing lengths to help build a children's hospital for Wales.

"His support has been a wonderful boost to the appeal - we are thrilled he has raised so much money," said Ms Mainwaring.
