The money, from the New Opportunities Fund(NOF), has allowed the local authority to set up information technology courses to run during the summer holidays.

Over the next three weeks children aged between 10 and 13 will spend week day mornings at the free sessions.

They will be taught at Blessed Edward Jones school in Rhyl, Prestatyn High, Ysgol Caer Drewyn in Corwen and Denbigh ICT Centre.

Out-of-school coordinator Tony Jones said the courses will have a creative focus.

"They will create videos, make music and learn more about Information, Communication and Technology (ICT)."

This is the first year of funding for the summer schools and local teachers have been recruited as course tutors.

The scheme will be developed next year and new locations will be used to encourage a wider participation.

Mr Jones said so far they have had a positive response from pupils taking part in the scheme.

Work by children attending the holiday sessions will feature on a web site to promote the county's summer schools.

At the end of each week, pupils will be tested on what they have learnt and they will have to put together a presentation using computer softwar.

The results will be available on their internet site.
